Surfrider Foundation Making No Waves

Surfing. A sport known for progressively classic imagery. The Surfrider Foundation did not do anything to further that, based on their latest rebranding. This new logo is on the same plain as the previous. Elementary. Read about it.

Musical Minimalism

Got some good posters paying homage to the fine art of music videos. Awesome stuff. Iconic pop music, set to video, and now put to print. Take a look… and then maybe a listen.

A Font's A Font

Came upon some serious font sites today. Thank you FreelanceSwitch. Font selection is often overlooked. But it cannot be. It could take days, weeks or months for a group of "savy" designers to come up with "the perfect font". Thank you Julian Hansen, you may have helped cut that time down to minutes. Check it.

Obey The Bearded Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix scraps his acting career and shoots for the stars again as a hip hop artist. This is the story of Casey Affleck's documentary, "Im Still Here". Gotta see this one. Shepard Fairey is backing it as well with some street art. Good stuff.

Thats What I Said…Booby Traps!

Thinking about all those favorite movies from growing up. Goonies. Gremlins. Ghostbusters. So awesome. Tom Whalen put together a collection to pay tribute to these iconic movies. Awesome movies with incredible artwork. Really strong stuff.

Made On Honor, Sold On Merit, Keep It In New England.

Narragansett Beer is making a resurgence that may seem to match the path of Pabst Blue Ribbon. The brand that Narragansett has established has a more polished & retro look that is quite appealing. Especially to those in the 21-35 year old demographic. Having spent a few years in the great state of Rhode Island, the home of Narragansett, I'm fully backing this company. Get on their site. Support the cause. Ask for it in your bar and every bar. They are trying to keep the brewery in New England, but they need our help.

If You're Ever In Tokyo…

Are you a Seat Monoplizer? Do you drink too much during the holidays and pass out on the subway? Random. I know. Who would have thought posters about subway etiquette in Tokyo could be so prolific. Cross culture references over the past century. Each poster is radically unexpected and most definitely needs an explanation. You got to see them all.

Back When I Was A Kid…

Some vintage ads from way back when. When Facebook, You Tube and Skype were new. Before they got all commercialized like they are today. Ahhhh…remember those days?

Curtis Jinkins (Not Curtis Jackson)

Some daily blog reading turned me onto Mr. Curtis Jinkins. Some real solid stuff here. Check out this logo for Houston Hobby Airport. Logos. Gig Posters. Just all out uber creativity. Inspiring. No doubt. Thanks Draplin.

A Stache of Pixels

Now I can't grow a thick mustache. If I tried, I end up looking like Paul Pierce. Who needs that. Not me.
But I could draw a nice stache and hit the old "Fill" button in my trusty Adobe Illustrator CS4. That works for me. Check out these font related tributes to the most manly of facial hair. As well as some more Old Tom Foolery.

Epic Indeed

Came upon some Epic Icons today that were all created by Chris Mitchell. A UK based designer that finds the process the most important part of the project. The impressive brands that he has worked with, and work he has subsequently turned out, has turned into an great body of work and allows him to stay true to his work. Stay epic Chris.

The Cup Of A Carpenter

Some of the big screen classics illustrated in Black, White and Red. Die Hard. The Last Crusade. The Deer Hunter. So awesome. I could stare at these all day. Olly Moss, I thank you very much.

Pennies Are Not Dead

Redesign the penny? Really? At one time, you could buy candy for a penny. Now, you're lucky to get it for a quarter. So instead of taking the honest Abe copper out of circulation, the US Mint opted for a redesign…of the back, that is. Eighteen designs were narrowed down to one. Was it the right one? Check all 18 out right here. Print Mag thinks its dreadful.

Four Wheels Of Evolution

So many automotive logos look as those they were created in a vacuum. Once I came across this little article, I realized that some of the best & worst car companies in the world have a solid "graphic identity" background. Take a look here. Mitsubishi has always bothered me, but now I see that there is a method to their madness.

Google Takes Your Foot Out Of Your Mouth

Google as a whole has enriched our lives whether you know it or not. And Gmail is the only web-based email service you should be using. It's amazing. If you need some more reasons to abandon your hotmail account from those college days, check out this list. Work Awesome.
Highlight: Mail Goggles
Not that any of you dear readers need this feature, but just in case … Gmail labs has a feature that could prevent you from firing off a late-night email to your entire company–or to an ex. It’s called Mail Goggles. Once enabled, Mail Goggles will ask you to complete a few simple math problems to prove your sobriety before you send each message. The math equations are timed, and Mail Goggles’ default is set to turn on late at night (the assumption being that users are more likely to EUI or email under the influence then). You can change the time window to anything you want.

Born To Run You Jerks

Found out about Dan Cassaro thanks to Draplin this morning. Take a look at this dedication to every Springsteen song imaginable. Take the $15 bucks out of your deep pockets, hang this on your wall, and put Thunder Road on repeat for 7 days. Young Jerks Be Free Tonight.

A New Age For Old MapQuest

Who uses MapQuest anymore? Not me. Since Google has entered my life, MapQuest has been tossed aside like a week old toy. Well, maybe this rebranding will help them get their niche back? Or not? Here's what they have to say about it.

100 Darth Vaders, 0 Anakins

Check out all of these custom painted, designed, etc. Darth Vader masks, all done up by some very important artists. They are all up for auction. Got a spare $3K in the bank. Ya, me neither. But a boy can dream cant he. Find your favorite. Darth Fink is pretty rad.

30 Years Of Waiting

The culmination of all of my 30 years brought me to this place. Over the past 6 days, I've said this about a hundred times, "I must have done something right to be right here, right now." Not to get sentimental, but it was a trip inspire and relax. Book a flight. Take a sketchy van ride. Eat a lot of jerk and the most amazing calamari that I have ever had.
Side note about the image: After sitting here and watching dolphins swim across the sea, Erin watched me jump off this 30' cliff into the crystal blue water. Amazing.

Warriors Of The Bay

The Lakers won and another California franchise has lost.
Im not advocating the previous Golden State Warriors logo, but this new logo is quite elementary. The attempt to capitalize on the whole "throwback" jersey phenomenon is simply a bad way to lead a team. Merchandise my sell, but Im not sure about tickets. Here are some more opinions and looks at the secondary logos.

Make It Burn

"Were you outside in the sun all day?!"
"Haven't you ever heard of sun block?!"
These are comments that I have encountered every summer for the last, almost 30, years. How I hate people sometimes.
My sun burn from this past weekend is a bit more abstract than the guy pictured here. Read about it.

Gamey Wood

Kinda like those jellybean jars…
"Guess how many wooden pixels are in this moose head?"
Your guess is as good as mine. Talk to Shawn Smith. He may tell you.

Art Park

Americana. Iconic imagery. Im real jealous of this stuff. Artwork of the USA National Parks. Makes you want to put on your Ranger hat and hang with Smokey the Bear. Classic. Old School. Timeless. Check them all out here.

Tim Lahan poking fun at some of the most incentivized phrases that we see everyday. Take something. Make it your own. Turn nothing into something. Thank you Tim. Luckily he has trademarked everything. Even trademarking.
